September 17, 2013

Drove to Williamsburg VA. Had lunch with cousin Lucy McEver and her daughter Robbye And her husband Sam Daniels and their daughter Mona. Drove back to Richmond VA. Toured granddaugter Abby and her husband Kevin's home. Very large and lovely. Spending evening with them. Good dinner at the Tobacco Factory restaurant. Leave for home tomorrow.

Slept in until 8:00AM. Visited Nils resting place in Arlington National Cemetery. Took Lee to Regan National for flight home. Dinner with Eric's family at restaurants my 81 st birthday dinner. Ramona treated.




September 15, 2013

Rode 56 miles in 6 hours and 8 minutes @ 9.49 MPH. Weather perfect for bicycling, clear, cool. Surface varied from reasonable firm smooth packed dirt to rough with a clay matrix with large pieces of gravel. Along Potomac River, very scenic. Stopped at White 's Ferry only work ferry on Potomac. Grill serves best pulled pork sandwich I have ever eaten. Many families walking, bicyclists, children on trail especially around Great Falls. Slow going. Difficulty meeting girls at end of trail. Map not easy to follow. Eric Amacher met them and got us linked up. Dinner with his family. Delicious. Are in Spring Hill Marriott, room 230. Rode 46 miles @ 9.86 MPH in 4 hours and 51 minutes. Trail surface well packed dirt and small gravel mostly good riding. Most of ride along Potomac River, very scenic. Many bikers, walkers, picnicers, tubers, fishermen and boaters on river and along trail. Beautiful weather, cool all day. Are in Hampton Inn in Fredericksburg MD 301 698 2500 room 330.




September 13 2013

Road 30 miles to Willamsport, MD @ 9.84 MPH, in 2 hours and 56 minutes. Went to bike shop and had rear tire replaced. Stone had put a hole in it. First 10 miles on asphalt on the Western Maryland Rails Trail, then back on C&O trail for rest of ride. Surface better today, packed dirt. Weather cool, perfect for bicycling. Did not drive back to Little Orleans but started back on trail in Hancock. Camille and Alan drove down from NJ and joined us for a tour of the Antietum Battle field and a good dinner. September 12 2013

Rode 61 miles to Little Orleans MD @ 9.7 MPH average speed in 6 hours 25 minutes. Went to bike Shoppe for new tube and tire check, all OK. First16 miles steep down hill 15 MPH. Great ride. Started C & O Canal in Cumberland MD. Path rough in spots not well maintained. Very isolated poor cell phone coverage. Losing air in rear tire, had to add a couple of times. Walked bikes through the Paw Paw tunnel, over half mile, narrow walk, uneven surface. Ran over a snake on the trail. Meet girls, drove to Hancock. Still have tire trouble. Will start back ride in Hancock.




September 11 2013

Road 48 miles in 5 hours and 53 minutes @ average speed of 8.19 MPH. Weather cool in AM severe storm w/close by lighting in PM. Trail surface good even when wet, handpicked dirt. Several long bridges, one very long tunnel. Passed Eastern Divide at2392. Crossed Mason/Dixon line. Took pictures. Had a flat rear tire in last tunnel caused me to fall. Have a first aid kit so Lee cleaned up my scrapes and we moved on. Are in Days Inn in Frostburg MR 301 689 2050 room148.

Rode47.5 miles to Confluence, PA in 5 hours 36 minutes @ 8.44 MPH. Weather partial overcast, mild. Trail surface dirt except asphalt in connellsville. Gradual climb to 1340 feet. Area very scenic. Lost my camera so are using IPhone camera. No phone in b&b so call on cell.

Departed home @ 8:20 AM. Drove 525 miles to Pittsburgh PA, arrived at 6:00 PM. Weather overcast, cool. TN, VA, & WVA Beautiful. Are in Holiday Inn 412_788 _8400, room 226.




September 9, 2013

Picked up Lee @ Pittsburgh airport. Plane about one hour late. Drove to downtown Pittsburgh, found start of trail. Rode 41 miles in 4 hours,31 minute at average speed of 9.05 MPH.First 17 in town, industrial area, noises. Many closed steel mills, but some still working. Lots of steel pipes being made. In country rest of way. Weather partial overcast, cool. Surface asphalt 18 miles, then dirt. Good surfaces. Are in Comfort Inn 724_929_3177 room 129.
